Imphal/Jiri, November 06 2011:
Following intimation from the Centre to Assam Rifles authority, the by-pass located near Jatinga in Silchar has been opened to Manipur bound trucks and tankers, informed CAF & PD Minister N Biren.
N Biren was talking to The Sangai Express in the backdrop of the looming crisis of complete unavailability of petroleum products and acute shortage of other essential commodities because of the prohibition on Manipur bound trucks and tankers to cross the worn out Silchar bridge.
Informing that trucks and tankers have started moving on the Jatinga by-pass, Biren stated the Dolu bridge built over Barak river would be inaugurated on November 19 .
As of today, 32 diesel tankers, 26 petrol tankers and seven LPG bullet tankers have crossed into Jiribam, he added.
On the other hand, Sadarghat bridge of Silchar, Assam which is providing links to Manipur as well as North Cachar Hills, and also access to Guwahati is in need of immediate repair.
The Cachar district administration has already prohibited plying of heavy vehicles on the bridge due to its deplorable condition thereby disrupting supply of essential commodities to Imphal along NH 37 .
It is learnt that of 18 bearings of the bridge, 13 are out of order.
Moreover, the bridge has also developed serious mechanical and technical snags .
