Cops sensitised on gender issue

A gender sensitisation workshop for police personnel was jointly organised by National Commission for Women (NCW), New Delhi and Manipur Police Training College, Pangei at the Banquet Hall of 1 Manipur Rifles, here, on Saturday.
Speaking at the occasion, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said that the differences between men and women in society have been carried on from generations to generations.
These differences are bound to affect the future generations, and as such, the Commission has been trying to put an end to the same through sensitising the masses on the issue.
She continued that the police first need to be sensitised.
In this, uniformed personnel should understand how to properly respond when female victims come to file police complaints.
She then highlighted that the situation of women in the northeast is much more favourable compared to the rest of India.
Women in Manipur are more empowered and participate in every socio-economic aspect of the society, she lauded, while mentioning that there are around 30 per cent of women police in the force with a separate women division.
Condemning the incident which happened to two women during the conflict, Rekha said that the incident brought shame not only to Manipur but also to India.
She then urged those in uniform to be responsible for the incident.
Manipur DGP Rajiv Singh (IPS) said that the Manipur society is full of educated people with long term vision.
He then said that gender sensitisation is important for police, adding that the protection and equal participation is vital in a criminal justice system.
Lauding the role played by women police, he informed that efforts are underway to increase the strength of women police in the department, apart from setting up women police stations in districts lacking the same.
Also, units led by lady police officers have been set up to handle crimes against women, he said, while stating that the department takes gender sensitisation seriously and has taken up requisite measures in this regard.
Responding to questions from the media prior to the workshop, Rekha said that the women could take the mantle for restoring normalcy in the state, keeping aside all differences.
In this regard, she has talked with women from different sections, she stated.
The workshop was also attended by top police officers and officials of NCW.
During the technical session, Rekha Sharma spoke on the topic of 'Stress Management and Life Skills', NCW GTA Ritesh Nangia on 'Introduction to Gender Sensitivity', IPS Renuka Mishra on 'Role of Police in effective handling of crime against women', and cyber expert Kesab Kumar on Cyber Crime Against Women' .
