According to sources, well-armed Kuki militants first fired towards trucks loading sand in a quarrying area nearby Moirangpurel village at about 1 pm and partially damaged five trucks.
The militants, however, ascended to the nearby hills when village volunteers rushed to the site after receiving report of the firing and took positions.
The Kuki militants taking positions on the nearby hills then fired towards Moirangpurel village using bombs and sophisticated weapons from 2pm onwards.
Village volunteers present in the area returned fire to the uninterrupted attacks from Kuki militants.
Though no casualty was reported in the fire-fight, villagers fled their homes and took shelter at safer locations.
Upon getting news of the fire-fight, Gorkha Rifles personnel deployed in the area parked their bullet-proof Casper vehicles at several key locations and took precautions to prevent the fire-fight.
A large team of Manipur police also rushed to Moirangpurel area to protect lives and properties of the villagers.
Large number of people including women from different parts of Imphal tried to move towards Moirangpural area but Gorkha Rifles had already took precautions and prevented the people from moving towards the conflict zone by parking Casper vehicles along some key roads leading to Moirangpurel area.
Mention may be made that a village volunteer was injured in another attack carried out by Kuki militants in the same area on December 31 last year.
