Meinya urges people to root out inequality from society

Imphal, September 29 2018: Observing that inequality is still prevailing in the Indian society although the country had adopted Indian Constitution which guarantees equal rights to all its citizens in 1950, Lok Sabha MP Dr Thokchom Meinya has called upon the people of the State to root out inequality from the society.

He was speaking as the chief guest in the 4th Observance of Lamyanba Hijam Irawat and Bharat Ratna Dr BR Ambedkar, 2018 which was organized by Dalit Sahitya Academy (DSA), Manipur at Manipur Pres.s Club, Majorkhul, Imphal.

The MP went on to point out that discrimination and racism are also prevailing in India besides the existence of unequal status among the people.

Stressing on the role of Hijam Irawat, he stated that the icon revolted against social injustice and suppression of the rights of Manipuri people by the King's rule and British regime.

He added that DR BR Ambedkar was another intellectual who contributed much to the Constitution of India.

He worked to uplift the poor section of the Indian society.

Delivering presidential speech at the function, All Manipur Dalit Development Association president Rajen Ayangba opined that the term Dalit would be preferable to all the poor and needy sections of the society.

He informed that 50 percent of the country's population are Dalits and added that there are many people who deserve to be called Dalit in consideration of their economical status.

There is a need of creating awareness on the concept of Dalit and the schemes and programmes being implemented across the country.

However, Dalit schemes and programmes seems to have been lacking in Manipur, he said.

He underscoring the need for uniting the said group/ class of people in the State to get their guaranteed rights and urged all organisation working towards this end to work tirelessly and prosper.

The function was also attended by Former Minister M Hemanta, DSA Assam Committee vice president Dr Ashok Kumar Laskar, DSA, India National Secretary Narendra Nath Sinha, Padma Shri W Gojen Meetei and social worker Th Ashakiran Devi as the distinguished guest, special guest and guests of honour respectively.

Dr Ambedkar Award 2018 was also conferred to many individuals for their contributions in uplifting weaker sections of the society.
