BISHNUPUR, Oct 27: Thanga Assembly Constituency MLA Tongbram Robindro has reiterated that decommissioning the Ithai Barrage is a long-standing demand of the people and is also a personal commitment of his own.
He made the statement while addressing media persons in connection with the concluding day of the 37th Loktak Day celebration, a two-day event organised by the Loktak Day Celebration Committee, Thanga.
MLA Robindro recalled that the people of Thanga had contributed money and resources to organise the event with the sole agenda to save Loktak Lake.
Recognising the importance of protecting the lake, the then government, led by the Chief Minister, extended significant support and declared Loktak Day a state festival, acknowledging that conserving Loktak Lake was a collective responsibility.
The opening day of the festival featured programmes highlighting the importance of conserving Loktak Lake and preserving traditional cultural practices.
A cycle rally and a fish-fingerling release programme in Loktak Lake were organised on the concluding day as major activities of the celebration.
However, in view of the prevailing situation in the State, the organisers have refrained from holding entertainment programmes, he added.
MLA Robindro said the construction of the Ithai Barrage by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) had adversely affected the condition of Loktak Lake.
He noted that the previous Government had submitted a letter to the Prime Minister seeking the decommissioning of the barrage in response to public demands, but no reply had been received so far.
He reiterated that decommissioning the Ithai Barrage remained a genuine demand of the people and said he also support the cause.
