KSO calls off proposed NH blockade

Imphal, May 21 2013: Following the assurance given by the chief minister of Manipur, the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO) will not go ahead with the proposed indefinite blockade to be imposed along the national highways leading to Manipur from May 22 .

"As per the honourable chief minister's assurances of carrying forward the backlog of 474 Scheduled Tribes' candidates in the ensuring recruitment of 2000 number of Manipur police constable and taking an immediate action nacessary in the backlog of 28 different posts in Manipur Police Housing Corporation Limited (MPHC), the KSO-General Headquarters has temporarily suspended its 24 hours general strike and the proposed indefinite economic blockade effective immediately," said the Kuki students' body today.

"The threadbare discussion at the Chief Minister's chamber along with minister for IFC Ngamthang Haokip, lasted for around one and half hour, in which the KSO seriously highlighted the grievances of the tribal people especially, in reservation policy and deprivation of tribal rights in the State," the KSO added.

The KSO said it had urged the chief minister to seriously look in to the matter of unfair means practiced in the current recruitment of police constable, in which an aspirant candidate has been allegedly charged Rs 300,000 and Rs 500,000 for Scheduled Tribes and General category respectively which became an open secret to the public.

"At the same time, the KSO demands to replace all the DPC members of the current recruitment board with sincere and competent officers to usher transparency in governance," the Kuki students' body added.

"As the KSO felt that, the reason behind the backlog of 474 posts in the recruitment process held during 20/2/2008 and 10/12/2008 was not due to non availability of suitable and eligible candidates, the KSO strongly demands the replacement of DPC members immediately to avoid backlogs in the future," it further added.

Meanwhile, the 24 hour bandh of the KSO passed off peacefully today in the Kuki dominated areas of Manipur.

The KSO thanked the people for extending their co-operation.
