The state joined the rest of the world in observing World Mental Health Day, 2023 under the theme 'Mental Health is a Universal Human Right' on Tuesday.
Health minister Dr Sapam Ran jan attended as chief guest of the World Mental Health Day, 2023 observance held at Hotel Imphal, North AOC here.
The event was jointly organised by National Mental Health Programme, National Health Mission and Directorate of Health Services.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Ranjan expressed that as stress is common problem no one should conceal such condition but consult psychiatric doctor early in case of any suspicion.
Concealing stress will lead to developing more dis eases, he cautioned, while adding that mental stress has become a pandemic amidst the global digital pandemic and awareness on mental health care has become highly necessary in contemporary period.
While asserting that people need to create an atmosphere where all the individuals are mentally fit and one should not hesitate from sharing his/her stress with others to overcome it timely and keep away stigma, Dr Ranjan said that Tele MANAS Cell has been opened in the state as a step forward in this regard.
Appreciating the role played by state mental health team amid the present crisis, the health minister encouraged the team to conduct follow up actions.
Health commissioner Pradeep Kumar Jha, who also attended the observance, said that mental health education will help in crisis times and lauded the role played by mental health experts and staff during the current crisis in the state.
He said that one should be happy for what he or she does in life and should learn to live a stress-free life.
Along with taking out a rally, slogan and painting competitions were also organised as a part of the observance and prizes were distributed to winners of the competitions.
Director (health services) Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, State Mission Director, NHM, Manipur Dr Somorjit Ningombam also attended the observance.
Manipur University, Department of Psychology along with Indian Medical Association Manipur State Branch also observed World Mental Health Day on the theme 'Mental Health is a universal human right' at MU court hall on Tuesday.
Speaking as chief guest of the observance, MU vice chancellor Prof Lokendra lamented that Manipur has become a state grappling with various issues at the juncture.
In addition to socio-economic problems, the state is also facing several issues including pandemic, insurgency, and ethnic crisis among others.
As such, it is natural that the people suffer from mental health issue as the state is plagued by numerous issues.
Moreover, urbanisation, modernisation and technological advancement have brought about a digital world.
But in the process children have become alienated from the mother nature.
They could not hear the sweet songs of the birds and natural beauty of the place.
Such distancing from nature impacts the mental health, consequently resulting in increase in the number of mental rehabilitation centres and mental hospital has arisen.
Nevertheless, mental health is also a basic right, he said.
The programme was also attended by MU School of Human and Environment Sciences dean Prof Jibonkumar and IMA Manipur State Branch president Dr Rk Lenin among others.
