Ukhrul, February 12 2015 :
Amidst tight security measures taken up in view of the 24-hour bandh imposed by Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL), Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh Thursday laid the foundation stone for construction of Ukhrul District and Session Judge court complex in the district.
The foundation stone laying ceremony was held Thursday afternoon under tight security.
No untoward incident has been reported so far.
However, normal life across the District was severely hit by the 24-hour bandh which began from last midnight.
TNL imposed the bandh alleging that the State Government has failed to initiate relief measures for the people of Nambhasi and its surrounding villages under Kasom Khullen Sub-Division of the district who were subjected to problems due to increasing activities of underground activists.
Owing to the bandh, Ukhrul town wore a deserted look.
Almost all the business centres, shops, private institutions and other establishments remained closed for the day.
Commercial vehicles including inter-district passenger service vehicles plying along the Imphal-Ukhrul section of the NH-202 stayed off the road for the day.
Amidst the bandh, the chief minister who was airlifted by a chopper along with his entourage to the District Headquarters laid the foundation stone of the district and session court complex.
State Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and Chairman of the Hill Areas Committee of Manipur Assembly were among the MLAs who attended the ceremony.
Addressing the gathering after the ceremony, Ibobi appealed the people of Ukhrul to co-operate with the Government in taking up development projects in the district.
Observing that in a democratic country like India, proper functioning and strengthening of the legislature, executive and judiciary is necessary, the Chief Minister hoped that once the construction of the court complex is over, inconveniences being faced by the people in seeking justice will be lessened.
