While expressing doubt on the death of K Prafullo, a gram panchayat member of Imphal west district in Guwahati where he was on a tour with officials of the state PHED to attend a consultative workshop at NIRD, Regional Centre recently, a public meeting at Konthoujam Mamang Leikai today demanded an enquiry into the death and deliver justice to the family of the victim.
The meeting pointed Chief Engineer of PHED and other six persons who were part of the journey as suspects alleging that K Prafullo of Konthoujam Mamang Leikai, a gram panchayat member was murdered in a conspiracy manner.
The public meeting was organised by the JAC formed in connection with the death of Prafullo and participated by representatives of various civil organisations like the United Committee Manipur, Kangleipak Students Association, LEIMAKON, Chingtam United Women Association, All Manipur Youth Protection Committee, All Kangleipak Students' Union, International Peace and Social Educational, Chanura Lamjinglen Kangleipak, NIPCO, HERICOUN, All Manipur Rickshaw Drivers' and Pullers Welfare Association, etc.
The meeting which pradhan and members of gram panchayat of the area resolved to press the government to conduct a judicial inquiry into the death of the Prafullo by submitting a memorandum to the Chief Minister and to book the culprit(s) behind the murder of the gram panchayat member.
It also resolved to demand terminate Chief Engineer of the PHED, M Ibomcha who led the tour team and other officials of the department included in it and take up appropriate action against them if they are found involve in the murder and payment of adequate compensation to the bereaved family.
If government fails to fulfill the demands, they will launch protest, the meeting resolved.
According to the convener of the JAC, S Binoy, Prafullo was part of the state team led by the Chief Engineer of the PHED as a member of gram panchayat to take part in a consultative workshop sponsored by the Union ministry of Rural Development organised at NIRD Regional Centre.
The team left Imphal for Guwahati on August 18, 2010 .
On the night of the last day of the workshop, family was informed that Prafullo sustained severe injury at the head when he accidentally slip on the ground and died at the hospital.
But the JAC suspected that on the cause of death as he was not brought up to the hospital even though he received severe injury in the head.
The family was also informed lately.
The statements of seven members of the tour were also all difference.
This has made doubt to the family as well as to the locals, Binoy added.
