AR conducts wreath laying ceremony

The Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR(South) conducted a wreath laying ceremony in honor of Col TS Mahil, SM(P), and L/Nk Kushal Singh, SM(P), who made the supreme sacrifice while displaying unwavering courage and dedication during counter-insurgency operations in Lodhi Basti, Assam, on July 24, 1994.According to a release issued by PRO HQ IGAR(S), the ceremony commenced with the laying of wreaths by the Officiating Commandant of the unit, who shared the story of these bravehearts to inspire pride and honor among the ranks.
A total of 4 officers, 13 junior commissioned officers, and 96 other ranks from the battalion paid tribute by laying wreaths and honoring the martyrs with a Guard of Honour.
Notably, on July 24, 1994, Col TS Mahil, SM (P), departed the camp at 1050 hrs with his escort to carry out operational tasks in Lodhi Basti.
While returning, near the outskirts of the village, his vehicle came under fire from armed militants.
Col TS Mahil sustained severe bullet injuries, and L/Nk Kushal Singh, his escort, was fatally shot in the neck and died on the spot.
Despite the efforts of the second escort to rush Col TS Mahil to a civilian hospital, he succumbed to his injuries due to excessive blood loss.
Both Col TS Mahil and L/Nk Kushal Singh demonstrated remarkable bravery, confronting the insurgents and prioritizing their duty over personal safety.
For their valour, they were posthumously awarded the Sena Medal.
