Imphal, August 20 2015 :
Women Action Development (WAD) vehemently condemned the brutal physical assult on three media persons working for Hueiyen Lanpao and Image Magazine by Manipur police commandos in front of newspaper office on August 17 even after they have been identified themselves as the media persons.
In a statement, WAD Secretary Sobita Mangsatabam said media is known as the fourth pillar of Democracy in India.
However, media persons have been repeatedly harassed by police or security forces and even some have been killed.
This indicated that there is no rule of law in the state, said Sobita.
The WAD Secretary further said media persons work "day and night" even at odd hours and it is the responsibility of every individual to support and cooperate with media persons but "such incident shows that there have no rights of the press and media" .
Sobita said, "This is very unfortunate and it is a crime against humanity".
She alleged that Home Department has given repeated commitments to protect media and still failed to fulfil its commitments.
WAD appealed the Government to look into the matter seriously and demanded that the culprits should be booked immediately and give them befitting punishment according to the rule of law so that such incident may not occur in future.
The organisation further appealed the Government to immediately investigate the case and deliver justice to the injured media persons.
