2,30,684 children given polio drops

Imphal, January 18 2015:
In an impressive showing, as against the target set for covering 3,34,054 children; 2,30,684 of them were administered pulse polio drops across the State on the first day of the three-day long Intensified Pulse Polio Immunization Programme on Sunday, thus registering 69.06 percent coverage.
According to information provided by District Immunisation Officers concerned at the end of the day, 20526 children were vaccinated in Bishnupur, 12693 in Chandel, 5687 in Moreh, 26452 in Churachandpur, 45990 in Imphal East, 51673 in Imphal West, 10346 in Senapati, 5550 in Kangpokpi, 1150 in Tamenglong, 46714 in Thoubal and 3903 in Ukhrul district.

Earlier during the day, inaugurating the pulse polio immunization drive being carried out by Directorate of Family Welfare Services along with State Health Society at the office of Family Welfare Services, BT Road here, Minister of Health & Family Welfare Phungzathang Tonsing stated that though India has been declared polio free country, there is a need to take precautions as polio is still prevalent in other countries.
The Minister, who graced the function as chief guest, maintained that polio immunization should be conducted from time to time as a precautionary measure to eradicate the disease forever from the State.
Referring to the outbreak of rabies in some parts of the State, he appealed to the people to administer anti-rabies vaccine to dogs.
Saying that other pet animals can also be inflicted with rabies, the Minister further appealed to the people to not release their pet animals including dog and cow in road and field.
The inaugural programme was also attended by Dr J Suresh Babu, Principal Secretary of Health & Family Welfare as president while Dr O Ibomcha, Director of State Health Services and Dr K Rajo, Director of Family Welfare Services as guests of honor.
