Along with inaugurating the three-day 2nd Imphal Literature Festival 2014 being organized by Sahitya Thoupang Lup in collaboration with Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy at the auditorium of the academy by Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam here today, the Thiyam Ibochoubi National Award of the academy was presented to Dr K Ibungohal from Hojai, Assam in recognition of his contribution towards development of the State literature.
The award which is given every two years carries a cash prize of Rs 10000, memento and shawl.
Four renowned writers coming from different places namely Philip Nilolayev (USA); Sheram Nirajan (Bangladesh); Swapan Nath (Bangladesh) and Satchidinanda (Delhi) participated in the inaugural function.

Speaking on the occasion as chief guest, Gaikhangam observed that it is impossible to develop a society without literature, while conceding that writers have been bringing changes in countries by their books, novels, short stories and intrinsic poems.
Asserting that literature had played a key role in the transformation of Europe and America as developed countries, the Dy CM maintained that theatre and drama plays cannot be developed without writers.
The role of writers in maintenance of development and unity amongst people belonging to different communities is pivotal, he added.
Gaikhangam then called upon writers in the State to introduce the land which is blessed with rich culture through their writings.
Today's function was also attended by Ningthoujam Nabachandra, chairman of the festival organizing committee and K Radhakumar, Secretary of Art & Culture Department as president and guest of honor respectively.
To mark the occasion, four books titled 'Lemhouraba Louhon'; Chenkhidraba Echel'; Ningshingli Houkhraba Matamdo' and 'Chinglon Kaya Lanna' authored by Th Rashini and N Kunjamohon respectively were released.
