Imphal, November 01 2011:
Manipur People's Party (MPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), state unit have welcomed lifting of the three-month long economic blockade imposed by Sadar Hills Districthood Demand Committee (SHDDC) along the National Highways passing through the state and reiterated appeals against imposition of such agitations that may cause hardship to the people over any demand in the future.
Talking to Hueiyen Lanpao, Vice President of MPP S Umananda observed that even if the economic blockade of SHDDC has been lifted after 93 days of causing hardship to the people, it is welcome.
He pointed out that MPP has all along exerted pressure on the state government for bringing about an amicable solution with SHDDC to end the blockade.
In this connection, MPP workers have even staged a day-long fast, besides staging Wakat Meephams and submission of representation to the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister.
A delegation of MPP leaders also called on the Governor for necessary intervention.
But it was unfortunate that the Governor did not act promptly.
Nonetheless, now that the blockade has been lifted and the suffering public can take a sigh of relief, Umananda said, while observing that subjecting the public to undue hardship over any demand, howsoever genuine or justifiable it may be, is not right.
In the same vein, President of MPP Youth Front Maniton Mutum said that lifting of economic blockade, though late, is good and everyone should refrain from resorting to any agitations in the future that may subject people to undue hardships.
He opined that the state government should compensate for the trucks which have been burnt down and suffered damage during the course of the 93-day long economic blockade.
President of BJP, Manipur Pradesh Shantikumar Sharma too said that lifting of longest economic blockade at long last with the collective efforts of the people is welcome and expressed hope that the government would keep its promise and fulfill the demand of SHDDC.
Shantikumar pointed out that his party is strongly against subjecting the people to undue harassment or suffering.
So, the leaders of BJP, Manipur Pradesh have even met the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister and other central leaders and raised the demand for imposition of President's Rule in Manipur to end the suffering of the people.
Matters related to development of National Highway 37 had also been put up during these meetings, Shantikumar recalled.
