Imphal, November 01 2011:
The Tongjei Marin District Demand Committee (TMDDC) has reiterated its appeal to the government of Manipur and the District Re-organisation Committee for early declaration of Tongjei Marin district.
In a statement, Chairman of TMDDC Abon Kamei contended that if ever a new district is to be created, the government of Manipur should give priority to the demand for Tongjei Marin district in due consideration of the remoteness of the area in comparison to the urbanized area of other district demands.
It is a historical fact that the proposed areas of Tongjei Marin have been bifurcated under various districts of Manipur from the erstwhile West (Tamenglong) district to crush the Kabuis and Kacha Nagas, now better known as Zeliangrong tribemen, who waged war against the British crown.
The people of Tongjei Maril area still suffer from this colonial hangover, Abon Kamei said.
He asserted that the Tongjei Marin people are denied their rights enshrined in the Constitution of India and the agony of underdevelopment and illogical administration should be acknowledged.
The legitimate and long standing demand of Tongjei Maril district should be declared prior to any other district demands, Abon Kamei added.
