In a continued effort to curb bird trapping, a joint team of the Kakching For-est Range and Pallel Beat Office conducted an extensive antipoaching drive in and around the Kharung Pat area on Wednesday, during which 14 bird traps were seized.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Divisional Forest Officer Thoubal, Dr Leishangthem Jeeceelee, and was led by Forester H Sanamatum under the guidance of Kakching Forest Range Officer Huidrom Sundar.
Speaking on the matter, Range Officer Huidrom Sundar said the drive was undertaken following specific information about regular poaching activities in the Kharung Pat Turel Mamei area.
During the operation, several bird traps laid by poachers were recovered.
However, the poachers, who were attempting to hunt birds using guns, managed to flee upon noticing the presence of forest officials.
He emphasised that sustained conservation efforts cannot succeed through enforcement alone and require active public cooperation.
Appealing to the people, he urged them to refrain from poaching and help conserve migratory birds, adding that protecting the regions' wetlands and birdlife would also help promote eco-tourism and enhance the natural heritage of the State.
