A man working as a Rearer in Sericulture Department was pulled out forcibly by some unidentified persons from his home last night and shot at an isolated place.
Elangbam Shyamkishore (55) s/o late Amutombi of Yaingangpokpi Awang Leikai was shot by unidentified men at an uninhabited place known as Teramakhong between Seijang and Leimakhong Mapal along Imphal-Ukhrul road at about 10 pm, said a police source.
It is reported that Shyamkishore was a Rearer at Gwaltabi Sericulture Office.
A bullet which hit him on the back exited through.
He was immediately rushed to JNIMS but later shifted to Shija Hospitals.
Denouncing the incident, people of Yaingangpokpi belonging to different communities staged a protest demonstration at Yaingangpokpi Keithel during which the market remained closed.
The protesters demanded an immediate halt to such activities like extortion, abduction for ransom and armed assault on civilians.
They also demanded to know which UG group was behind the act of shooting and injuring Shyamkishore.
According to information culled from the spot, four unidentified armed persons came to the house of Shyamkishore at about 9.30 pm after crashing the gate while he was relaxing in the verandah.
One of them wielded automatic rifle, while the other three were armed with pistols.
The armed persons demanded Shyamkishore to take them Pungdongbam and Sekta in his car.
On being offered to take the car, the armed persons said that they could not drive.
The next moment, Shyamkishore was forced to drive the car taking the armed persons towards the South.
He was accompanied by his wife Mema.
On reaching Teramakhong, Shyamkishore was pulled down from the car and the armed persons confiscated the key of the car before opening two rounds of fire in the air.
Just as Shyamkishore tried to flee, he was shot from behind by the one wielding automatic
rifle.
Leaving Shyamkishore and his wife there, the armed persons hurried away from the scene taking the car which they said they could not drive.
Shyamkishore reached hospital after he informed his neighbours and relatives about the incident through mobile phone.
Meanwhile, Shyamkishore's car hijacked by the armed persons was recovered by police from Shantipur near Nongada this morning.
On the other hand, troops of 23 AR, acting on a specific information, have recovered two two-wheelers suspected to have been used by the armed assailants in the course of a search operation today.
At about 9.30 am, one Honda Activa (MN-04B/5106) was recovered from Nongada followed by recovery of a Yamaha motorcycle (MN-1J/1684) from Seijang.
Both the vehicles have been handed over to Lamlai police station, added the source.
