Headquarters Eastern Command celebrates 98th Raising Day

Headquarters Eastern Command celebrated its 98th Raising Day today.
On this momentous occasion, a wreath laying ceremony was organised wherein Lt Gen MM Naravane, AVSM, SM, VSM, GOC-in-C Eastern Command paid tribute to the martyrs, conveyed a statement issued by PIB (DW) .
He wished all Ranks and Civilian Defence employees on the occasion of 98th Raising Day and called upon everyone to continue working with dedication and devotion in the true traditions of the Indian Army.
The Command was formed in November 1, 1920 at Nainital under General Sir H Hudson, with territorial jurisdiction over Delhi, UP, Bengal, Bihar, Odisha and Assam.
Thereafter, owing to operational commitments, the Command Headquarters shifted to Barrackpore", Ranchi and Lucknow before permanently settling down in Fort William Kolkata in the immediate wake of the Sino-Indian Conflict.
The Command has done the Nation proud for its role in spearheading the Liberation of Bangladesh achieving a decisive victory against Pakistan in the 1971 war.
The Area of Responsibility of the Command encompasses eight States overseeing 63 % of the land borders of the Country.
Aligning itself to local needs, the Command leadership is focused towards Nation building and in consonance with the Government's Act East Policy, it has been at the forefront of developmental activities in the remote areas of the North East executing numerous welfare and infrastructure projects in every State of the North East, it stated.
Some of the noteworthy initiatives have been establishment of Disha Boys Hostel at Leimakong for underprivileged children and facilitating recruitment training to the youth thereby meeting their aspirations of a better future and weaning them away from the perils of insurgency.
In the field of Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, Eastern Command has been instrumental in flood relief operations in Tripura, Manipur, Assam in June as well as evacuating stranded and injured tourists from earthquake affected areas of Sikkim in September this year.
