Indefinite bandh at Moreh

Imphal, July 14 2010: Expressing serious concern over the attempts to abduct some leaders of Meetei Council, Moreh (MCM) by some armed militants suspected to be cadres of one of the outfits presently on Suspension of Operation (SoO), the Meetei Council, Moreh (MCM) and Kha Nongpok Apunba Nupi Lup, Moreh jointly announced a lightning indefinite bandh at Moreh town today.

Moreh bazar and all shoping complexes in and around Moreh remained closed due to the bandh today.

Informing the mediapersons based in Moreh at a press conference held at the office of the MCM at Moreh, the leaders said that the Moreh Town Commander of KNA and some of his collegues wielding big guns came to the houses of MCM leaders and asked for them at about 8 pm yesterday (Tuesday).

The armed cadres also attempted to abduct a leader, the office bearers of MCM said.

The militants threatened the MCM saying that if one of their fellow workers got hurt due to the valley UGs' actions, a leader of the Meetei community would be eliminated .

The incident was reported to the security forces in time, but they did not do anything to arrest the militants who were roaming about in the area carrying big weapons, the MCM leaders lamented.

They said, this indifferent attitude of the security forces has been taken seriously by the people of Moreh area.

MCM, being a law abiding organisation, had lodged complaints about the incident with the authorities concerned, the leaders said.

They also said that all the security agencies posted at Moreh have severely failed.

They remain as silent spectators at the sight of the militants moving around in Moreh areas carrying big and small weapons and do anything as they wish.

The MCM leaders further demanded that all the security agencies posted at Moreh be replaced by some other security force who would be able to control and fight the miscreants.

Unless and until this demand is fulfilled by the government, the MCM would not change its decision to continue the indefinite bbandh at Moreh town and surrounding areas.

The mcm leaders further alleged that the militants who are on SoO are openly carrying weapons and acting as gang licensed by the government.

Unless the government stops and controls them, a civil war may break out in Moreh areas.

The government and the security forces should take necessary actions to avert such an undesirable situation.

The threats given by KNA and its frontal organisations that for every action of the valley UGs, the MCM should be held responsible is very illogical and untenable, the MCM leaders said and added that as long as this thinking remains in the mind of the parties concerned, there will never be peace in Moreh areas.
