National Law Day

As in other parts of the country, High Court Bar Association of Manipur (HCBAM) observed National Law Day as part of its silver jubilee celebration at the auditorium of High Court of Manipur today.
Advocate General of Manipur Th Ibohal Singh, HCBAM president Senior Advocate Kh Binoy Kumar and Bar Council of Manipur chairman Senior Advocate N Ibotombi graced the function as chief guest, president and guest of honour respectively.
Senior Advocates N Kumarjit, Kh Mani and RS Reising also attended the function as special guests.
In his keynote address, Advocate A Mohendro said that the day was observed to mark the anniversary of adopting the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949 .
He also said that the purpose of celebrating the day is to rededicate to the cardinal principles of rule of law, independence of the Judiciary and independence of legal profession which collectively formed the solid foundation on which the Constitution was drafted.
He added that the Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949 and after 30 years, the day was declared as the National Law Day under the leadership of Dr LM Singhvi of Supreme Court Bar Association.
Since then, the day is observed every year all over the country by the members of the legal fraternity, he said.
The day is also observed to remember the 207 eminent members of the Constituent Assembly.
In his speech, Th Ibohal said that the day was celebrated as the Constitution Day till 1978 .
In 1979, the Supreme Court announced to celebrate the day as the National Law Day.
N Ibotombi while speaking at the function said that the day should not be forgotten by every citizen of the country particularly who are in the legal profession.
He said that the Constituent Assembly started drafting of the Constitution on December 9, 1946 .
After taking two years and 11 months, the Constitution was adopted on November 26, 1949, he said.
Senior Advocate Kh Mani said that it was unfortunate that no one from the State could take part in drafting the Constitution.
He further said that the Constitution was adopted one month after Manipur became a part of the Indian Union.
He also said that as per the recent order of Union Ministry of Empowerment and Social Justice, the day would be observed as the Constitution Day from this year again.
