Rapist sentenced to 7-years jail term with Rs 50,000 fine

A woman, victim of rape finally gets justice after 18 years of fighting in the court as the District and Session Judge Manipur East pronounced its verdict today awarding seven year of imprisonment of the accused rapist.
The court of District and Session Judge Th Surbala, conducted the hearing to the case today, pronounced the sentence of seven year imprisonment to the accused rapist Okram Abung alias Premjit son of O Ibobi of Tabungkhok village in Imphal West District with a fine of Rs 50,000 .
Eighteen year back, on July 28, 1992, Abung, an auto-rickshaw driver, raped the woman repeatedly after she was abducted on her way to home from her grandmother's house.
Abung, who was found waiting for the woman when she came out from her grandmother's house at the junction between Patsoi part-I and part-II convinced her to take a lift upto her home.
But on the way he took her to other way and when she tried to jump down, she was threatened with a knife and taken into a house at Langjing.
She was raped several times inspite of her strong protest and after night stay in the house she was again shifted to another house where she was again raped against her will.
The woman who was 16 year at that time lodged a complaint with the Lamphel police station where the police take up the case under FIR case no.328(7)92 Lamphel PS 366/376 IPC read with section 34 of IPC.
Police, during the course of investigation arrested the alleged accused Abung on July 30, 1992 at about 10 pm.
The additional public prosecutor of the government, Ng Tejkumar who took main initiative in the fighting the case for the last 18 years satisfied over the delivery of justice to the rape victim woman said that the court has given its convicted the accused rapist in a hearing held on July 15 last but the sentence of the hearing was pronounced today.
The court after examination all the facts and circumstances with regard to the incident and after hearing arguments of counsels of both the victims and accused, pronounced the sentence giving seven year imprisonment with a fine of Rs 50,000 today.
