A total of 4.20 lakh banana plants have been distributed for extensive cultivation in all the districts of the State under Technology Mission by the Department of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Government of Manipur.
The banana plants were distributed to farmers at a function held at Mantripukhri with Horticulture and Soil Conservation Commissioner K Moses Chalai as chief guest and Director K Ngachan as president.
The banana plants were distributed to farmers of nine districts as well as two sub-divisions.
Speaking at the occasion, Commissioner Moses Chalai said that the farmers seemed little aware of the projects/schemes being taken up by the department.
It is the duty of the department's staff to inform farmers about the various schemes and seek suggestions from farmers and the public.
He also appealed to the farmers to consult experts of the department on how to cultivate the banana plants scientifically.
Director K Ngachan said that the banana plants being distributed was of Grand Naine variety.
He advised the farmers to water the banana plants regularly until they are fully matured.
Farmers of Thoubal, Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Tamenglong, Senapati, Ukhrul, Chandel and Churachandpur were given 40,000 banana plants each.
While 30,000 plants were distributed to farmers of Kangpokpi sub-division and 15,000 each to Moreh and Jiribam sub-divisions.
