11th TNZL Sports, Literary & Cultural Festival kicks off

The weeklong 11th Tangkhul Naga Zingtun Longphang (TNZL) Sports, Literary and Cultural Festival was inaugurated on Wednesday at Phalee village ground in Ukhrul district.
The festival was formally inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Ukhrul, Asish Das, by hoisting the TNZL flag in the presence of MLA Khashim Vashum.
Extending New Year greetings, MLA Khashim Vashum expressed gratitude to the organisers for bringing together the western Tangkhul villages at Phalee village for the celebration of the 11th TNZL Meet.
Speaking on the development initiatives in the region, the MLA stated that the Mahadev-Talloi-Pfutsero road, a key route connecting Ukhrul with Senapati and further to Nagaland, is now being properly maintained.
He added that efforts are being made to coordinate with the concerned departments and the ministry to expedite the remaining works in the larger interest of the area.
The MLA also informed that the LM Block office has become operational and is rendering services to the people to facilitate development under the block.
Highlighting local achievements he said the GI-recognition of Sirarakhong chilli and Kachai lemon has brought pride to Manipur, particularly to the western Tangkhul villages, and has helped the products reach wider markets.
He further urged all participating teams to uphold the true spirit of sportsmanship during the competitions.
Later, the MLA unveiled a wall of monuments erected at the village ground, lit the sports cauldron and officially declared the 11th TNZL Sports, Literary & Cultural Festival open.
Deputy Commissioner Asish Das, in his address, lauded the western villages for hosting the grand event, stating that such platforms help tap the potential of youth and enable them to compete and represent at higher levels.
Later, a memorandum was submitted to the Governor of Manipur, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, through the Deputy Commissioner seeking immediate attention towards the development of education, healthcare, sports and other sectors in the village.
The inaugural function was attended by representatives of TNL, TSL, TNAWL, TKS, TMNL and leaders of the area villages.
The week-long festival features various sporting events including football, volleyball, table tennis, along with literary competitions such as quiz, and youth parliament.
A total of 15 villages from the Western Tangkhul areas are participating in the 11th TNZL Meet-2026, hosted by Phalee village.
