Imphal, October 10 2023: The Department of Psychology, Manipur University in association with the Indian Medical Association (Manipur State Branch) observed World Mental Health Day 2023 at the Court Hall of Manipur University today.

The event was graced by Professor Naorem Lokendro Singh, Vice Chancellor, MU as the chief guest; Professor RK Lenin Singh, Department of Psychiatry RIMS Imphal and president of IMA (MSB); Professor M Akshayakumar Singh, former Head Department of Clinical Psychology RIMS, Imphal and Professor S Jibonkumar Singh, Dean, School of Human and Environmental Science and Head Department of Psychology as the presidium members.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, Professor N Lokendro said that Manipur is in dire need of psychological services and highlighted the importance of the Department of Psychology.

As a State that has been hugely impacted by COVID-19 pandemic and again the present conflict, there is a huge necessity of having psychological services in the State, he said.

On the occasion, Professor RK Lenin Singh stressed on the need for positive thought for good for mental health.

He added that spreading awareness can help people of different communities and societies to understand mental health issues.

Meanwhile, Professor S Jibonkumar Singh spoke about equal treatment to everyone including people with mental illness and the important role of psychologists and their contributions to society.

Meanwhile, Dr Akshayakumar spoke about the impact of good thoughts and bad thoughts and their origin.

A speech and painting competition on the theme "Mental health is a universal human right" was also held in the Department of Psychology, MU on October 9 .

Students from the University and beyond participated in the competitions while the department also provided free psychological assessment to the students and people gathered to take part in the event.

Separately, in a combined observation of World Mental Health Day 2023 and its 23rd foundation day, Share and Care (SAC), Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal has launched a Youtube channel christened 'Mental Health' .

The Youtube channel was officially launched by SAC ambassador and renowned film actress Leishangthem Tonthoi during the 23rd foundation day ceremony held at Manipur State Film Television Institute (MSFTI) auditorium at Konung Mamang today.

The event was attended by BK Bijanbala, president, SAC; Uttam Ngangbam, Director Social Welfare Department; A Ibomcha Sharma, Deputy Director, DDK Imphal; A Gitchandra Sharma, Program Head, AIR Imphal and Balendra Salam, Director, MSFTI as the presidium members.

Speaking on the occasion, Leishangthem Tonthoi informed that the channel will upload episodic interviews of well-known Manipur psychiatrist Professor RK Lenin.

The prevalence of mental health issues in society has not only been pointed out by experts but ordinary people have first-hand experience or witnessed these issues, she said.

Thus, she lauded SAC for launching the Youtube channel with a focus on mental health and urged people to support the channel and gain some valuable information from it as well.
