MSCW reviews conditions of IDPs at Kakching
Source: The Sangai Express / DIO

Kakching, March 26 2025: The Manipur State Commission for Women (MSCW), in collaboration with the Kakching District Administration, conducted a camp sitting to assess the living conditions of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and related victims at the Conference Hall of the DC Kakching Office Complex.

MSCW Chairperson Thumlip Tiningpham Monsang, who presided over the meeting was accompanied by N Dayabati Devi, Member MSCW and Sophia Moyon, Member, MSCW.

They were accorded warm welcome by the Kakching District Administration team led by Deputy Commissioner Rohit Anand, IAS .

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted that as a major step towards the rehabilitation process, 484 families have been sanctioned for resettlement in Serou and Sugnu and 276 houses are under construction.

Most of the houses are nearing completion and displaced families are slowly moving back to their homes.

He added that those who were at the relief camps in Kakching Headquarters are also moving back to Serou, either to their own houses or to their relatives' houses and are waiting for financial assistance for reconstruction.

Stating that over the past two months the number of camp residents has significantly decreased with approximately 800 individuals having successfully relocated, the DC expressed gratitude to all the concerned departments for their tireless efforts over the last two years for relief and rehabilitation work and said they have played a big role in bringing back the displaced people to their normal life.

He highlighted that all the relevant departments in the district are looking after the inmates of the relief camps.

He mentioned that the Health Department is visiting the camps bi-weekly to provide medical assistance.

A special mental health initiative has also been taken up to address any psychological distress or trauma, he added.

DC also informed MSCW team that One Stop Centre and Child Welfare Committee are monitoring the women and children in the camps to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Stating that no case of mental or physical trauma has been reported so far in the district, DC informed that to tackle such situation coordination with officials, volunteers and police department is ensured to prevent any untoward incident.

Regarding sanitation, the DC commended the Municipal Council for its proactive role over the past one and half years.

Despite jurisdictional limitations, the council has been helping in timely cleaning, waste disposal and maintenance of septic tanks and toilets in the camps.

Also, the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has been supplying water to the inmates so that basic amenities are not compromised, he informed.

Today, the MSCW team appreciated the District Administration Kakching for its plan to set up a sanitary pad manufacturing unit in Serou for which Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie is sponsoring for the procurement of machines.

It may be mentioned that the machines would be run by IDPs in Serou and the pads manufactured would be procured by District Administration Kakching for distribution to the Relief Camps.

The MSCW team interacted with various departments such as Social Welfare, KMC, ZEO, CMO, ICDS, PHED, Kakching Police, One Stop Centre, volunteers/representa-tives of relief camps among others.

The MSCW team appreciated the departments for their efforts and urged all to continue their work to give maximum support to IDPs.

The meeting was also attended by Additional District Magistrate, AC to DC, SDOs Kakching & Waikhong among others.
