State joins world environment day observance

Imphal, June 05 2010: World Environment Day was observed under the joint aegis of Manipur Pollution Control Board and Science Teachers' From, Manipur at Manipur Science Centre, Takyelpat today.

Delivering the key note address of the observance, retired principal of DM College of Science Prof G Tomba Sharma recalled that in 1972, UN conference on human environment was held at Stockholm for two days from June 5 to 6.Since then World Environment Day is being observed every year.

He explained that we are observing the day to preserve the nature and make the people aware of the importance of our environment.

Every year, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) selects a theme for the observance and the theme for this year is 'Many species, one planet and one future', he said.

Speaking as chief guest of the function, Chairman of Manipur Pollution Control Board E Dwijamani observed that according to the Environment Act, 1986, we the people have to control the environment.

So we need to be aware and understand this Act.

During the time of our forefathers, the environment was in control but it is not so today, he lamented.

We need to plant more trees to control the environment degradation, he added.

He also pointed out that the service and responsibility of the Municipality is to clean the city every week or every and submit reports to the Pollution Control Board.

MLA of Khundrakpam A/C Th Lokeshore, who was also present and spoke at the occasion, said that to preserve the natural products, we need to preserve the nature.

However, trees are being cutting down for livelihood in some parts of the State.

So, we need to stop this by giving some other work to these people, the MLA observed.

Professor of Life Science Department, Manipur University Dr B Manihar Sharma pointed that deforestation has led to drastic change in the climatic conditions, thus affecting the lifestyles of the people.

According to the report of NSIC, 2010 is the hottest year in the last two decades, he added.

Associate Profess of Life Science Department, Manipur University Dr N Monilal Meetei said that we have to save the environment from further degradation because we want to survive.

When the environment changes, even the habits of the animals also change.

So we need to save the environment, he said while stressing on the need of creating awareness on environment along the children as well.

Science Teachers' Forum, Manipur president Dr H Nandiram Sharma and Member Secretary of Manipur Pollution Control Board K Jagadishwor Singh were also present at the function.

In commemoration of World Environment Day, Biodiversity, Ecology and Environment Network (BEENET), Manipur inaugurated a habitat site for valuable indigenous plants in the Manipur University campus today.

Vision Foundation, Manipur; Integrated Development Organisation; Thoubal Block Youth Congress Committee, People's Resource Development Association, Legend Studio, etc also observed the World Environment Day today.

In connection with the World Environment Day, Vision Foundation Manipur organised a tree plantation programme under the sponsorship of Environment and Ecology Wing, Government of Manipur inside JNIMS campus today.

The tree plantation programme was led by JNIMS advisor Dr AD Singh and JNIMS Director Dr Th Biren, conveyed a press release.
