Imphal, October 15 2014:
The State-wide 18-hour general strike, clamped by the Co-ordination Committee of several underground outfits, crippled normal life in the State today.
The strike was called to observe October 15 as National Black Day as in past years.
Although, no untoward incident was reported, all the important roads including National and State Highways were empty as almost all types of vehicles were off the roads in the valley districts during the stir, which ended at 6 in the evening.
Inter-district passenger services were suspended for the day.

All the market places in valley districts including Imphal wore a deserted look with all the shops and business establishments remaining shut.
Even as schools, colleges, movie theatres, petrol pumps and other private institutions remained closed for the day attendance in Government offices was also sparse.
However, some four-wheeler and two-wheeler vehicles, mostly related with essential service matters and security personnel, were seen on the roads in Imphal streets.
Security was tightened during the day with the State Government deploying a large number of security personnel at various corners of Imphal to stop unwanted incidents.
It may be mentioned that Manipur's 'annexation' by the Indian Union was announced to the people on October 15, 1949, after the then King of Manipur, Maharaja Bodhachandra signed the Manipur Merger Agreement on September 29, 1949 in Shillong.
