World Environment Day observed

Imphal, June 04 2026:
Two major programmes marked the observance of World Environment Day 2026 in Imphal on Thursday, stressing cleanliness, plastic reduction, and climate action.
Manipur University
The Department of Environmental Science and the NSS Cell.
Manipur University, held a Mass Cleanliness Drive and "No to Single-Use Plastic" Campaign under the theme "Mission LIFE: Lifestyle for Environment" at the Traffic Point, MU Canchipur.
Supervised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Ministry of Environment Forest & Climate Change, the programme was led by Prof Laishram Santosh Singh.
Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, and Prof RS Khoiyangbam, Head, Department of Environmental Science.
It was supported by NSS Programme Officers Dr H Suraj Singh, Dr Kh Herachandra Singh, Dr T Deepamanjuri Devi, Dr Dalip Singh, and faculty members Dr Konthoujam Khelchandra Singh, Dr Wazir Alam, Dr Maibam Dhanaraj Meitei, Dr Chingakham Raghumani Singh, and Dr Binota Thokchom.
Around 200 NSS volunteers, students, and faculty took part.
A mass awareness rally with placards and slogans was followed by a campus cleanliness drive.
Prof Santosh Singh urged support for the national campaign "One Nation, One Mission: End Plastic Pollution".
Prof Khoiyangbam encouraged adoption of environmentally responsible practices.
Langol Laimanai
The Laimanai Schedule A Welfare Association, Langol Laimanai, observed World Environment Day at the Langol Laimanai Community Hall under the theme "Inspire by Nature for Climate for Our Future" .
SHUA Hospitals and Research Centre Managing Director Dr Palin Khundongbam attended as chief guest.
Association president N Nanao Mangang presided, while social activist Oinam Amatjit and Dr Soram Gautam were guests of honour.
Dr Palin said the UN Environment theme is highly relevant as global warming threatens human survival.
He cited carbon emissions from fossil fuels, deforestation, and CFCs from air conditioners as key drivers of ozone depletion, rising UV levels, and health risks including cancer.
"We must discuss what preventive steps people can take", he said.
In the technical session, PhD scholars Khoinaijam Shasikanta.
Lenin Thounaojam and Shynyan Khumukcham gave presentations on "The Role of Urban Wetlands and Forest in Climate Change Mitigation in Imphal Urban Region", "Environmental Change and Ground Water Scenario in Manipur" and "Climate Change Impacts on Agricultural Productivity" respectively.
