Imphal, August 11:
Describing the failure of the State's politicians to lift the AFSPA from the State despite the massive public out cry following the brutal murder of Thangjam Manorama as unfortunate and iresponsible, Manipur University Students' Union today appealed to the politicians not use the ongoing public agitation as some sort of political game for their self interest.
In a statement, H Ashirjit Luwang said that Ministers and MLAs should join the people's movement more openly instead of shouting from behind their protected walls as they have nothing lose but only to gain in joining the people's movement.
Stating that the ongoing people's agitation is the result of the continuous atrocities committed on the people by the Central security forces during the last twenty four years, Ashirjit said that the State Govt will never be able to suppress the people's movement with its security force as the people's anger and hatred against the dreaded laws are deep rooted.
Referring to the recent statement given by the Home Minister and the defence Minister inconnection to the demand for removal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act from the State, he said that the statements of the two Central leaders clearly shows that they have very little knowledge on the origin of the present crisis in the State.
He also added that the current agitation is not only against the murder of Manorama but also against the AFSPA which have been responsible for eliminating hundreds of innocent civilians in fake encounters in the last two/three decades.
Asserting that the Central leaders have completely failed to comprehend the demands of the people, he said that the people are demanding for removal of AFSPA from the State and not for withdrawal of Assam Rifles and further said that withdrawing or not withdrawing AR from the State is meaningless if the AFSPA is still continued as atrocities are being committed by all security forces rampantly.
He also reiterated that the people will continue the ongoing agitation until and unless AFSPA was completely from the State.
