A low intensity earthquake
measuring 3.4 on Richter's
Scale was recorded today at
around 8.11 am with its
epicentre traced to a place
located 8 Kms to the South West
of Tamenglong district headquarters.
Another tremor which had
its epicentre at a place 78
Kms to the North West of the
State capital was recorded at
3.55 pm yesterday.
Chief Secretary O Nabakishore
said that 168 houses
made of mud and bamboo/
wood were damaged by the
January 4 earthquake at
Charhajar and Kalapahar.
O Nabakishore convened
a joint meeting of the officials
of Relief and Disaster Management,
Home Department
and Deputy Commissioners
this morning and discussed
about casualties and distractions caused by the January 4 earthquake.
According to reports furnished by DCs, Senapati district
suffered maximum damages.
The earthquake killed eight persons and injured 108 and
altogether 513 structures were damaged.
Four expert teams of National Disaster Management Authority
would arrive here on January 9 to make a direct
assessment of the destruction and losses caused by the earthquake.
The teams would also inspect Government as well as private
buildings.
Informing strict instructions would be issued to abide by
buildings by-laws during construction of new buildings, the
Chief Secretary said that Rs 2.40 crore has been released to
take up immediate relief measures.
Meanwhile, the State Government has asked the Central
Government to provide Rs 20 crore as relief assistance for
earthquake victims.
NDRF teams left for Kabui Khullen, the epicentre of the
earthquake today in order to launch search and rescue operations.
Restoration work of the tower which supported power
cables between Yurembam and Karong is going on after it
was razed to ground by the earthquake.
Power supply may be resumed by Sunday, Nabakishore
said.
