Demanding both the State Government and Central Government to trace the whereabouts of Nongmaithem Ibocha who went missing after he entered Myanmar on March 24, locals staged a sit-in-protest at Heirok Part II Mayai Leikai in Thoubal district yesterday.
The protest demonstration was jointly organised by Chaokhat Khongthang Semgat Nupi Lup and the Joint Action Committee constituted in connection with the incident.
Speaking to newspersons at the protest site, Ibocha's wife Bhanu expressed strong displeasure over the State Government for remaining a mute spectator to the case.
She demanded the Government to communicate with the Myanmarese authority to locate her missing husband as soon as possible.
Bhanu lamented that her family members are reeling under mental trauma after Ibocha went missing unexpectedly.
Advisor of the JAC, Mandira Laishram said that the JAC had submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren with regard to the case but no substantial step has been taken up to establish whereabouts of Ibocha.
Suspecting hands of some individuals in the missing case of Ibocha, she demanded the Government to find out the individuals and punish them in accordance with the law.
She warned of launching intense agitation along with civil society organisations in case the demands are not met at the earliest.
Placards reading, "People of Heirok are also citizens of the country", "State Home Department should intervene in the case", "We condemn irresponsible Government", "Establish whereabouts of Ibocha at the earliest" etc were put up at the protest venue.
Mention may be made that Nongmaithem Ibocha of Heirok Part II Laishram Leikai had gone missing ever since he went to Namphalong Bazar, Myanmar on March 24 for exchange of currency.
