MSM Curator feels urgency to set up museum at DHQs

Imphal, June 20 2017: Museums played a pivotal role in conservation of a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical importance.

As such, there is an urgency to set up a museum at all district headquarters.

This will go a long way in promoting the integrity of the State which is a home to a mosaic of cultures and different ethnicities, opined Curator of Manipur State Museum Yendrembam Binita.

Curator of Manipur State Museum Yendrembam Binita while speaking to The Sangai Express at her Manipur State Museum office located near Mapal Kangjeibung, said construction of the Manipur State Museum, which is under the State Art and Culture department, was started in 1966 at the present location.

In 1969, the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi inaugurated the museum.

The museum has attracted visitors from various corners of the State apart from visitors from other parts of the country as well as abroad.

During the period from April 2016 to March 2017, the museum collected a revenue of about Rs 3,18,535, she said.

Stressing the need to set up museum at all districts, Binita said the same would help in preservation of the cultures, customs and history of the communities inhabiting the district.

Manipur State Museum, INA Moirang, Kangla Museum, Andro Cultural Complex, People's Museum Kakching, Tribal Museum and Research Centre, Sagolband, TRI Museum, Chingmeirong, RKCS Art Gallery, Keisham-thong, Zogam Art and Cultural Development Museum, Chura-chandpur, MU Museum, Three Mothers' Art Gallery cum Museum, Wangkhei Thangapat Mapal, Khamba-Thoibi Museum, Moirang Ngangkha- lawai, Manipur Science Centre, Takyelpat, Chingu Thangjing Museum, Moirang, Ukhrul Ranshak Shim Museum, Moreh Museum and Tamenglong Museum are surviving museums of the State.

All private museums are run through funding from Ministry of Culture.

The MSM has helped privately run museums in getting approval from the Ministry of Culture, she said.
