Imphal, June 05 2018:
Manipur University Students' Union (MUSU) has launched an indefinite shut down of Manipur University (MU), including the SBI and Bank of Baroda MU branch, as a part of its agitation demanding immediate resignation of the university's Vice Chancellor.
The semester examinations currently underway at MU will however not be disturbed, said MUSU in a statement late in the evening today.
It may be mentioned that from May 31, MUSU shut down the Administrative Block of the university demanding resignation of VC, Adya Prasad Pandey for hampering the academic atmosphere and failing to take up any development initiative for the university.
Speaking to media persons, MUSU social and culture secretary, Laishram Robindro alleged that the Dean of School of Human and Environmental Science, Arun Saxena holds many post of the university like Development Committee, Purchasing Committee, Chief Warden of Guest House, Centre's Director and demanded the Dean to resign on moral grounds as he misused his powers for his self interest.
He said that MUSU also strongly condemns the act of ABVP organising secretary, Manipur and Mizoram, Mahesh Bhagavath, for spreading false message about MUSU on social media sites and asked Mahesh to apologise to MUSU within three days.
Robindro narrated that yesterday, the PRO of the university, Ganesh Sethi, who does not know any of the local dialect, resigned from his post as well.
It is very unfortunate that the VC turned a deaf ear to the students' agitation and instead was busy attending a programme of BJP, he added.
Robindro explained that during the total shutdown of MU campus, MUSU will not allow any convoy of Assam Rifles to pass through the campus and warned that until and unless Professor Adya Prasad Pandey resigns, MUSU will continue the indefinite shutdown of the university.
The VC does not keep the statutory posts of Registrar, Examination Controller, Librarian and Curator as regulars and are only assigned as in-charge.
He alleged that the VC is always out of station and has spent around Rs 8 crore in travelling expenses so far during his tenure.
He also never mentions the date when he will come to the office while taking leave, Robindro alleged.
At a time when there is already an issue regarding the presence of an Assam Rifles camp inside the university's campus, providing the VC with 'Y' category security and bullet proof vehicle (which cost almost Rs 60 lakh), is same as turning the university into a military camp, Robindro added.
He further said that MUSU has also decided to submit necessary memos to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovid regarding the issue at the earliest.
