NE students attack : Gurgaon Police nab three main accused

Gurgaon, October 17 2014 : Gurgaon Police today nabbed three persons accused of assaulting two northeastern students in the city's Sikanderpur area on Thursday.

The police have also confirmed that the attacks had an element of racial bias.

"The main instigator has two cases registered against him already.

It is a case of hurt and definitely there seems to be an element of ethnic bias and ethnic discrimination over here," said Nazneen Bhasin, DCP, Gurgaon East.

She also added that when the police was informed yesterday about the attacks, they quickly reached the spot and registered a case.

The police also formed multiple teams to nab the accused.

Two youths from Nagaland, Aloto Chishti and Awang Newmei, were beaten up and assaulted by a gang of seven in the Sikanderpur area of Gurgaon on Thursday.

The attackers were reportedly inebriated and badly assaulted the duo.

Chishti and Newmei were later admitted to a private hospital with severe wounds.

Prior to this attack, a 26-year-old engineering student from Manipur was roughed up in Bangalore by a group of men who reportedly abused and then attacked him for not speaking Kannada.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul M Sangma said that such attacks happen because there is a lack of knowledge among the people about the diversity of India.

"The problem is lack of knowledge of our own diversity of this great nation.

Problem is also because we have black sheep among all the communities," Sangma said in Guwahati.

He also said that the concerned states must be proactive in tackling such crimes.

"The need first is to clear their understanding about the huge diversity of this country.

The second is that the concerned states, upon who the responsibility of law and order is concerned, they must be proactive.

Another part is that every state must take upon itself the responsibility of administrative reforms," Sangma added.
