Mayanglambam Rameshwar who secured the second highest number of votes in Kakching Assembly segment in the State Assembly election held in 2017 was today sworn in as an MLA.
Acting on an election petition filed by M Rameshwar against Yengkhom Surchandra who won the election, the High Court of Manipur passed an order on November 5 which declared the election of Y Surchandra as null and void.
The same order entitled Rameshwar to be declared elected as the representative of Kakching AC.
Speaker Y Khemchand administered the oath of office and secrecy to M Rameshwar at a simple ceremony held at the Speaker's chamber at 10 am today.
The swearing in ceremony was attended by Chief Minister N Biren, Cabinet Ministers, Lok Sabha MP RK Ranjan and MLAs.
Speaking to media persons inside the Assembly complex after the swearing in ceremony, N Biren said that in a democracy, Legislature, Judiciary and Executive have separate functions and powers.
In the election petition case filed by M Rameshwar, the Judiciary has rightly exercised its own power, and the Government respects it, he said.
BJP was not enjoying absolute majority and there were cases of dissidence within the Government as it is a coalition Government in addition to the political turbulence caused by some MLAs switching sides.
As such, the past three years and a half were not very peaceful, Biren said.
Citing people's support and the huge turnout on the polling day, he exuded confidence that BJP would emerge victorious in all the four Assembly segments which went to by-polls on November 7 .
He also mentioned that BJP has already captured Singnat Assembly seat unchallenged.
About the bandh called by some organizations regarding the selection of site for construction of Tribal Freedom Fighters' Museum, the Chief Minister clarified that it is a Central Government funded project, and it is not specifically mentioned in the project details to name the museum after Rani Gaidinliu or construct it in her native village.
However, the State Government has no problem to name the museum after her or construct in her native village if the people want it and Central Government permits the same.
As such, the State Government is communicating with the Central Government in this regard, the Chief Minister said.
He also said that the State Government has invited the concerned organisations for talks so that the bandh is suspended at the earliest.
M Rameshwar said that his priority is to actualize and implement the vision of Chief Minister N Biren Singh i.e.'Go to Village', 'Go to Hills' and 'School Fagathansi' because these three missions were unheard of in any part of the country earlier.
As such, these are being replicated by different States now, he added.
Regarding the recent High Court ruling, he said, "It is a justified landmark decision.
My faith in the judicial system has been further enhanced after the decision".
Later the newly sworn in MLA was given a warm welcome by the people of Kakching with the BJP Kakching Mandal organising a function to fete him at Yumbimacha High School Kakching Community hall.
Chief Minister N Biren who was also present at the reception said "the aspirations of the public who voted for the BJP have been fulfilled" .
MLA Rameshwar said " that it was under the BJP Government of PM Narendra Modi at New Delhi and CM N Biren at Imphal that the ILP to protect the rights of the indigenous population of the State was extended" .
He also praised the "Go to Hills' and the "Go to School' policies of the CM.
The function was also attended by BJP Manipur Pradesh president S Tikendra, BJP MLAs and other leaders of the BJP Manipur Pradesh.
