Imphal, January 14 2026: Local duck breed, Manipuri Duck (locally known as Meitei Nganu or Eshing Nganu) has been registered as a distinct indigenous duck breed of Manipur.

The breed has been registered by the ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Kamal, Haryana, following approval by the Breed Registration Committee in its 13th meeting held on November 12, 2025 at New Delhi.

The Manipuri Duck was among 13 indigenous livestock and poultry breeds approved and was assigned the accession number INDIA_Duck_1200_Manipur-11008 .

The breed registration certificate was formally handed over to CAU, Imphal by Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Union Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development during an animal breed registration certificate and breed conservation award distribution ceremony held on January 14, 2026 at New Delhi.

Dr TC Tolenkhomba, Dr Haobijam Chaoba Singh and Dr M Noijit Singh received the certificate on behalf of CAU, Imphal.
