National seminar on "Cultural Festival: The identity of tribes in North East India" kicks off

A three-day National Seminar on "Cultural Festival : The Identity of Tribes In North East India" kicked off today at the Community Hall, Tangkhul Avenue, Imphal.
The seminar was organised by the Department of Political Science & Human Rights, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University (IGNTU)- Regional Campus, Manipur under the sponsorship of Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi.
The inaugural session of the seminar was attended by Dr Ninghorla Zimik, retired Principal, Pettigrew College, Ukhrul; David K Shimray, former president Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL); Fellson Y Lunghar, former Member, ADC Ukhrul and Prof Ng Ngalengnam, Director, IGNTU, Regional Campus, Manipur as presidium members.
The seminar began with a welcome & keynote address delivered by Prof Ng Ngalengnam.
Addressing the gathering, Dr Ninghorla Zimik observed that more study and research are required to widen knowledge on the unique cultures and traditions of the Tangkhuls.
She underscored how certain Tangkhul rituals and festivals gave room for women empowerment highlighting the gender sensitivity of several ancient customs.
She also encouraged academicians, intellectuals and young scholars to actively engage with academic works to enlighten the world about several traditions that have been abandoned due to the onslaught of modernity.
David K Shimray elaborated on the importance of preserving tribal custom & culture while Fellson Y Lunghar spoke on Tangkhul Naga festivals.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Hoising Koren, Research Scholar from IGNTU.
The inaugural session was followed by two technical sessions chaired by Dr Homen Thangjam, Assistant Prof, Department of Political Science, IGNTU-RCM and Dr Soihiamlung Danmei respectively.
In the technical sessions, resource persons namely Dr Shimreingam Hungyo, Asstt Prof Pettigrew College Ukhrul; Dr Heisnam Kenny Devi; Grace Dear Kasar, Asstt Prof, Political Science, IGNTU-RCM; Rmgam, Research Scholar, Department of History, Manipur University; VS Soreimi; Khayingla Mashangva, Asstt Prof, Department of Geography, DM University; Chuileiton Ngalung, Research Scholar, Political Science, IGNTU-RCM; Vareishang Phungshok, Research Scholar, Social Work, IGNTU-RCM; Themchuiso Vashum, Research Scholar, Political Science & IRS, IGNTU-RCM and Hiosing Koren, Research scholar, Political Science, IGNTU-RCM presented papers on various topics.
