Bridge snaps, car plunges into river

A father-son duo escaped death by a whisker when a car (Maruti Suzuki A-Star) plunged into Iril River after a hanging bridge snapped at Urup Naokon, Imphal East district under Irilbung police station.
Md Sahid (42) of Urup Naokon was taking his seven year old son Md Imtiaz Ahamad to tuition class in the car.
As they crossed a hanging bridge at around 3.30 pm today, the bridge snapped and the car plunged into Iril River whose water level is quite high at present.
Md Sahid managed to open the car's door and retrieve his son.
As the father and the son emerged out of the water, they were helped by people present in the area.
But the car could not be recovered.
It is said that the bridge which broke down today was an important link between Arapti and Urup Naokon.
UG cadre held : A team of Kakching and Waikhong police arrested one cadre of KCP (Taibanganba) who allegedly extorted money from the people in Kak-ching, Thoubal and Imphal West.
Arrested from Elangkhanpokpi along Indo-Burma road today, the arrested cadre has been identified as Koijam Uperjit (29), s/o K Amu Singh of Thounaojam Awang Leikai and he works under the command of s/s vice chairman of of the outfit Rajesh alias Malemnganba Meitei, said police.
