Many more mourn demise of Ratan Thiyam

Imphal, July 27 2025: Condolences continue to pour in from different quarters mourning the untimely demise of theatre icon Ratan Thiyam.

Ratan Thiyam breathed his last on Wednesday at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Imphal after a prolonged illness.

He was 77.In separate releases, Manipur People's Front, Khangjeng Repertory Theatre and Communist Party of India, Manipur State Council have expressed profound sorrow and condolence over the untimely demise of theatre icon Ratan Thiyam.

The organisations hailed the deceased as a visionary playwright, director, poet, and philosopher who redefined both Manipuri and Indian theatre through his masterful integration of tradition and modernity.

Stating that his death has left a huge vacuum which will be difficult to fill by anyone, the organisations also shared the grief of the bereaved family and prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace in the heavenly abode.

Moreover, Manipur Cultural Organisation (MCO) convened an emergency meeting yesterday at the residence of retired IAS officer and president of MCO, Kangjam Radhakumar in Uripok to mourn the passing of Ratan Thiyam.

During the meeting, members of MCO observed two minutes of silence as a mark of respect to Ratan Thiyam.

Later, executive members and advisors of MCO led by Kangjam Radhakumar visited the residence of Late Ratan Thiyam in Uripok to extend their solidarity to the bereaved family.

They also offered floral tribute to a photograph of Late Ratan Thiyam.

Khwairamband Ima Keithel Joint Coordinating Committee for Peace (KIKJCCP) also organised a solemn event at Khwairamband Keithel today to mourn the demise of theatre doyen Ratan Thiyam and retired IPS officer Potsangbam Sonamani.

During the event, women vendors of Khwairamband Keithel observed three minutes of silence as a mark of respect to Ratan Thiyam and Potsangbam Sonamani.

They also shared the grief of the bereaved family and prayed for the departed souls to rest in peace in the heavenly abode.
