Consultation Workshop on e-governance

Imphal, May 03 2012: A one-day state consultation workshop on 'citizen centric e-government' organised jointly by the Department of Information Technology and Manipur State Information Technology Society was held at Classic Hotel today.

The workshop, said to be amongst 50 similar programmes being organised in all the States and Union Territories, was held with Chief Secretary DS Poonia and Additional Secretary (E-Governance), Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DEITY), Govt of India, Rita Teaotia as the chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

Delivering the key-note address, DS Poonia, who is also the State's Secretary for Information Technology stated that the series of workshops are being conducted to amplify the mission and message of the national e-governance to all the regions of the country.

With many State in various stages of rolling out many public services on the e-governance platform, the NEGP Apex Committee had decided to create awareness about NEGP initiatives among the stakeholders, discuss challenges in delivery of e-services, identify State specific issues and understand emerging technologies from industry, the chief guest.

Informing that the string of workshops will cover all State capitals, Union Territories and some important cities by July this year, he conveyed that the first workshop was held at the national capital Delhi in July 2011 .

Today's workshop is said to be the 13th in the series.

Noting that the Imphal workshop is being participated by key stakeholders of the national e-governance plan drawn from Central and State Government, e-governance consultants, technology partners and implementing agencies, Poonia highlighted that the National E-Governance Plan, a key component of the Government's 'inclusive growth' strategy was approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2006 .

The National e-Governance Plan aims to deliver public services to the common man in his locality to make them both accessible and affordable, maintained the Chief Secretary.

In her address, Rita Teaotia stated that compared to the recent past both development and utility of information technology in the administrative sector has multiplied to such an extent that it has become an important component in every spheres.

Stressing on the need to sustain the momentum of development in information technology, the Additional Secretary said advancement in the IT sector would automatically boost socio-economic development of the nation.

Among others, State's Special Secretary (IT) Dr S Birendra also attended the workshop wherein various resource persons elaborated on the workshop theme.
