Imphal, August 30 2018:
Even though most other urban local bodies have completed selection of beneficiaries and have already begun construction of houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaz Yojana (PMAY), the number of beneficiaries within Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) could not be determined yet.
PMAY, better known as Housing for All, was launched with the main objective of constructing houses at the cost of Rs 1.50 lakh for urban dwellers who do not have proper houses.
Altogether 27 urban local bodies are executing the scheme in the State.
Out of the 27 urban local bodies, 24 have completed selection of beneficiaries and necessary amounts have been sanctioned.
However, three urban local bodies including IMC are still unable to complete the process of selecting the beneficiaries, informed a source.
Nonetheless, the two urban local bodies other than IMC have started the process of determining number of beneficiaries.
As per the scheme's guidelines, annual income of the beneficiaries should be below Rs 3 lakh and they should not be living in pucca houses but the homestead lands should be jointly registered in their names and their spouses.
In this regard, the Chief Minister earlier instructed all officials concerned that re-registration of pattas of PMAY beneficiaries should not entail any expenditure.
Urban local bodies should carry out a survey to select eligible beneficiaries and areas identified for construction of houses should be geo-tagged and the same should uploaded on the relevant website of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Money for PMAY will be released in three instalments but the number of beneficiaries is not fixed.
Anyone whose house is in shabby condition and fulfils the criteria set by the Ministry, he/she is eligible for the scheme.
Incidentally, the Government has set a target of constructing 20,000 houses within IMC areas by 2022 .
But IMC is yet to complete the process of selection of beneficiaries.
Nonetheless, a meeting has been scheduled at City Convention Centre on August 31 to determine PMAY beneficiaries residing within all the 27 wards of IMC, informed the source.
