Thoubal, December 24 2022: A tense atmosphere erupted at Pallel last night after a woman was killed in a 'misfire' .

The incident took place at Pallel Mamang Leikai while the deceased was coming to buy some items from a pan shop at Pallel Mamang Leikai at around 10 pm.

She was hit by a bullet fired by a personnel of Manipur Police Telecom Organisation (MPTO) who was arguing with the owner of the pan shop.

Peeved over the incident, the locals dismantled the pan shop and torched the old building of Pallel police station.

The deceased has been identified as Moirangthem Jeemi Devi (36) w/o M Kiran from Pallel Mamang Leikai and she left behind a daughter while the shooter Kongkham Birjit s/o K Nabadiweep from Konchak Mamang Leikai has been handed over to Kakching police station following his surrender this morning.

According to a report culled from the spot, Jeemi lost a son of 1.5 years not long ago.

It is reported that police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and smoke bombs to disperse the protesters.

There were injuries (minor) on both sides (police and the protesters) .

A committee christened JAC against the murder of M Jeemi has been constituted and they demanded the competent authority to arrest K Birjit within 24 hours during a sit-in protest staged today.

Reportedly, Birjit, a personnel of MPTO posted at Pallel, has an affair with T Tarubi, the woman who runs the pan shop.

Speaking to the media, a friend of the deceased and witness Moirangthem Khomdombi said that the pan shop was closed when they reached there but Tarubi and Birjit were found sitting beside the shop.

She claimed that Birjit suddenly pointed his gun at Tarubi but the latter deflected it and the bullet instead hit Jeemi.

Convenor of the JAC Atom Nungsi stated that Jeemi was taken to Jeevan Hospital at Kakching but succumbed to the bullet injuries.

Another convenor of the JAC Romen Khuman asked the State Government and the authority concerned to reveal whether the gun brought by Birjit was licensed or issued and provide adequate compensation to the bereaved family.

He also appealed to Kakching MLA and the SP to deliver the assurances they gave to them.

Shops and other private establishments at Pallel were closed in protest against the 'gun culture' today.
