Source: The Sangai Express

Imphal, October 17 2014 : By election to the Hiyanglam Assembly Constituency passed off without any major incidents with at least 94.99 pc of the voters exercising their franchise rights over the 34 polling stations spread across the Constituency.

The total number of voters who turned out to vote, till the time of filing this report in the evening stood at 23, 266 out of a total number of 24,492 voters.

Male voters accounted for 11,258 and females 12008 .

The total number of male voters is 11,953 and 12,539 female voters.

Voting was not so heavy in the morning with 412 voters turning up to vote at Lamjao Girls' LP School till 11.15 am today.

This is the polling station with the largest number of voters.

At Waikhong Junior High School, out of the total of 589 voters, 513 had cast their votes till 1 pm while at Waikhong High School, which has 533 number of voters, 445 had cast their votes till 1 pm of today.

With heavy security arrangements put in place, with numerous armed personnel on duty, a large number of people could be seen coming out to exercise their franchise rights.

Although it was not clear who the voters had cast their vote for, all the political parties could be seen putting their best foot forward.

BJP candidate Maibam Dhanabir struck a confident pose and told the media that the BJP would come out victorious by a huge margin.

Predicting the result of the election, Dhanabir said that the Congress would come second with some seven thousand votes while the Trinamool Congress would come in the third position.

The people are fed up with the gross corruption of the Congress, he said and added that the BJP will bring in some positive changes.

On the other hand, TC candidate Dr Yumnam Radheshore predicted that he would emerge victorious in the by election.

Radheshore said that though the TC would not get too much vote at Sekmajin, Konuma, Hiyanglam and Hiranmei, the party would be able to make up the deficit in the other places.

MPP candidate M Amutombi said that all the National parties have reduced the voters to trading items.

The election code of conduct has been violated with impunity by the National parties, he alleged and added that the election observers have not been able to do anything.

Amutombi said that he joined the fray under the impression that the voters of Hiyanglam must have matured and added that despite this the National parties have turned the election to a big jamboree.

This reporter however could not meet the candidates of the Congress and the MSCP.
