Imphal, September 15 2024: The JAC formed in connection with the case of a stillborn child in alleged police action has suspended its 24 hour bandh after meeting Chief Minister N Biren Singh today.

Norem Sanjita, the mother of the stillbirth is still in RIMS's ICU and the dead foetus was removed from her womb yesterday.

It may be mentioned that Sanjita was admitted to RIMS's ICU on September 12 when she fell unconscious after inhaling smoke from a tear gas shell which landed close to her house at Kakwa Naorem Leikai.

Meanwhile, 20 representatives of the JAC met with the Chief Minister from 4.30 pm to 6.15 pm today.

They submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister.

The demands which the JAC submitted to the Chief Minister include barring police from firing tear gas shells or mock bombs at residential places while controlling agitators, suspend SDPO Singjamei and to take responsibility for all the injured in the excesses of security forces at Kakwa on September 11 night.

After the meeting, the JAC called off the 24 hour bandh it imposed as the Chief Minister reportedly has assured to fulfil their demands.

Speaking to the media in front of the CM's Secretariat, JAC convenor Naorem William said that they got a positive response from the Chief Minister during the meeting.

He said that the JAC urged the Chief Minister to not let the security force fire tear gas shells, mock bombs or smoke bombs in residential areas during the meeting.

The State Government will bear all the treatment cost of Sanjita who is battling for life at RIMS's ICU and the same has been assured by the Chief Minister, he said.

William continued that the Chief Minister has also assured to take action against the police personnel who fired tear gas shells at residential areas at Kakwa on September 11 night which led to the hospitalisation of a nine month pregnant woman in a critical condition and also to release the protesters who were arrested on that night unconditionally.

Further stating that the Chief Minister has assured to give adequate compensation for the demise of the stillborn child before it is cremated, William said that they expect the Chief Minister to keep his words.

Meanwhile, William said that the last rites of the stillborn will be held by fixing a date.

Earlier in the day, the bandh enforced by the JAC at Kakwa affected normal life in the said area.

A number of vehicles were stopped and asked to turn back by the bandh enforcers on the road.
