More than 100 Meiteis reach Cachar

Imphal, July 23 2023: More than 100 Meiteis fleeing Mizoram have reached Cachar, Assam and are taking shelter in different relief camps opened at Cachar Bantarapur and Binnakandi Lakhimpur.

Briefing media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Haorangbam Rajmani, Advisor to the United Rural Development Society, Bantarapur said that members of the Meitei community residing in different parts of the Northeast region have been taking shelter in relief camps opened at Bantarapur and Binnakandi since the beginning of the violent crisis.

Those who could afford fares for the Silchar-Imphal flight had left for Manipur after staying some days but some people are still staying in the relief camps, Rajmani said.

Womenfolk and locals of the area have been generously donating cash and kind to United Rural Development Society in order to provide relief materials to the displaced people.

As advised by senior members of the Society, four members came to Imphal on July 16 to provide relief materials and extend solidarity to the suffering people.

He said that they had also visited a number of relief camps opened in different parts of Manipur and extended their solidarity to the displaced people.

Information received from Bantarapur, Cachar this afternoon said that more than 100 people belonging to the Meitei community have reached the relief camps opened at Cachar Bantarapur and Binnakandi Lakhimpur from Mizoram after a veiled quit notice was served to Meiteis residing there, he said.

The number of Meitei people fleeing Mizoram and arriving at Cachar is likely to increase considerably tonight as information has been received that a number of vehicles carrying Meitei people from Mizoram are on their way to the relief camps, Rajmani said.

He then appealed to all the Meitei people staying in different parts of the world to stand united as one and be strong, both mentally and physically, to fight any force which challenges the territorial integrity of Manipur.
