Thangals celebrate Ang-Gee-Pheo Fest

Ang-Gee-Pheo, the annual festival of the Thangal tribe was celebrated today with great pomp and traditional gaiety at Tumnou-pokpi near Kalapahar in Se- napati district with Deputy Director (Archives) K Sushila Devi and Thangal Union pre-sident H Khangba as the chief guest and functional president of the celebration.
Among others, customary rituals, war dance of the Thangal tribe, traditional extraction of fire, tug-o-war for women and racing with the limbs with logs used to husk paddy-grain on the back were the highlight of the festival.
Speaking at the occasion, H Khangba regretted that the due to its numerical inferiority compared to other major tribes and alleged indifferent attitude by the State Government, the Thangals continue to remain among the least developed tribes of Manipur, socially and economically.

Highlighting that when Manipur was a kingdom the Thangals not only remained loyal but also enjoyed patronage of successive rulers, the Union president desired that the Government of Manipur initiate necessary measures for economic development of Thangal tribes to sustain the age-old bond.
As the chief guest, K sushila assured that the State Archives will extend all possible assistance for preservation of customary and traditional practice in all the 11 Thangal-dominated villages of Manipur.
The Ang-Gee-Pheo festival is said to be the traditional festival of the Thangals welcoming advent of the New year.
celebrated widely before embracing Christianity, the festival is normally marked by the people of Thangal cleaning their homes and weapons of war along with seeking blessing of the almighty for their wellbeing.
