CPPKT warns of intense agitation

Imphal, December 29 2025: The Committee on Protection and Preservation of the Historical Rights of Koubru and Thangjing Hill Ranges (CPPKT) has warned of strong public protest if the unauthorised and unwanted structures constructed in the sacred sites of Thangjing and Koubru are not removed at the earliest.

A team of CPPKT went to the Raj Bhavan today for an audience with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla but they were denied any appointment with the Governor.

Nonetheless, the team submitted a memorandum at the office of the Governor.

Speaking to media persons, CPPKT secretary Shyam Khumanthem said the memorandum highlighted how Meiteis have been denied their religious and cultural rights by denying access to the sacred sites of Ibudhou Koubru, Ibudhou Thangjing and other sacred sites since May 3, 2023 .

Through the memorandum, the CPPKT demanded the Government to allow Meiteis perform religious rites and rituals at these sacred sites and take pilgrimage to the abodes of Lord Koubru and Lord Thangjing.

The memorandum urged the Governor to remove the unauthorised and unwanted structure constructed in the sacred sites at the earliest and protect all the sacred sites including Koubru and Thangjing, Shyam said.

He said that a number of similar memoranda were submitted to the past Governors and then Chief Minister N Biren.

One such memorandum was submitted to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on December 16, 2025 .

As the Government did not take up any positive action, CPPKT, local clubs, Meira Paibis and the general public took out a mass rally from Ibudhou Moirang Thangjing Laikon to H Nilamani Ngangkhalampak Sports Complex on December 28, he said.

The mass rally culminated with a public meeting where certain resolutions were adopted unanimously.

"We submitted the resolutions in the form of a memorandum to the Governor", Shyam said.

He said that copies of the same memorandum will be submitted to the Chief Secretary, the MLA of Moirang AC and Deputy Commissioners concerned.

He also appealed to all indigenous people to support the initiative of protecting historical, cultural and religious sites and added that there will be strong mass agitation if the Governor fails to give any positive response to their request to protect the sacred sites and allow believers of the indigenous faith to take pilgrimage and perform religious rituals at the sacred sites of Koubru, Thangjing and other such holy places.
