Citing hardships and insecurities being faced by them, people of Phougakchao Ikhai Maning Leikai in Bishnupur district, who fled their homes following the communal violence on May 3 and are now eager to return to their native places, have appealed to the government to provide basic assistance and amenities to facilitate sustain their livelihood.
The locals expressed their concern through a group of likeminded people led by one Ngangom Mamata Devi of Keishampat Leimajam Leikai during their visit to distribute essential items to the village volunteers.
The group not only extended assistance but also bulk purchased handloom and handicraft products made by people of Phougakchao Ikhai Maning Leikai.
The group had earlier extended assistance including cash to various Meitei villages in the peripheries and also to relief camps.
According to the locals, many of them who are currently taking refuge in relief camps and other safer locations desire to return to their respective homes.
However, most of them are hesitant due to insecurity reasons owing to location of a Kuki settlement nearby and lack of livelihood sources.
The locals also expressed discontentment over alleged failure of the local MLA to meet them and assess ground condition of the locals till date despite assuring assistance to the needy.
