Thoubal, July 31 2023:
Decrying the suspension of the officer in-charge of Nongpok Sekmai police station over the viral video case, locals of Nongpok Sekmai and nearby villages stormed the police station on Monday and sealed the gate demanding revocation of the suspension order.
Earlier, the protestors organised a sit-in protest at NESA ground, Nongpok Sekmai denouncing the suspension of the OC and sacking other police personnel.
From the protest site, the protestors marched towards the PS and blocked the entrance to the PS .
ASP (Ops) Thoubal also came and tried to pacify the protestors.
However, they demanded the ASP to send someone who can fulfil their demand and locked down the gate of the PS to register their protest.
According to the protestors, the May 4 incident was unprecedented as the mob of around 7000 people were emotionally charged by the reports of Kuki atrocities against Meeteis in Churachandpur and Moreh on May 3 .
The first couple of days of the violence was so intense that several innocent lives were lost, several houses as well as vehicles including that of the DGP targeted.
In such a situation, the OC of the police station was in no position to control the overwhelming mob and singling out the OC for the incident is uncalled for.
Decrying the suspension, the protestors enquired why the 60 MLAs should not resign or why other police officers and officials should not be suspended for their inability to control the violence at the very beginning.
Besides, there has been no arrest of any of those involved in first incidents of violence, the protestors said while asking the reason for such inaction against the other community.
