Imphal, July 23 2023:
While commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi for speaking out against the disturbing viral video of May 4, Human Rights Defender Manipur (HRDM) has questioned if he will simply forget the scores of people who lost their lives during his 70+ days of silence.
HRDM joint secretary Kenny Khwairakpam raised the question during a press conference held at Nagamapal Singjubung Leirak jointly organised by HRDM and Human Rights Council today.
Stating that everyone condemns the dastardly act, Kenny Khwairakpam maintained that Manipur is known for the respect afforded to its womenfolk.
As such, he called the incident very unfortunate and highly indefensible.
He claimed that the incident occurred on May 4 in response to the unprecedented violence which erupted on May 3, as can be heard in the video.
However, he questioned if the hundreds of lives lost in the conflict will be swept under the rug and forgotten while the nation focuses on the two unfortunate women and the deplorable treatment meted out to them.
He further asked if the Prime Minister considers the precious lives lost as a "joke" .
Kenny Khwairakpam also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inform the people if the ongoing strife is a case of 'ethnic clash' or the result of 'narco-terrorism' .
"The people are stuck in the middle and confused", he said.
Reiterating the call for peace, he urged the Prime Minister to stay true to his vow to serve and protect the people.
Thus he appealed to the Prime Minister to restore peace in Manipur while adding that the people's sufferings are unimaginable.
